To parphrase Bob Dylan ‘how many players must a manager want to walk down’, in the case of Rafa Benitez the head coach at Liverpool F.C. it is the extraordinary number of, SIXTY-TWO! Another club in the same division a mere thirty miles away has only twenty-seven signed professionals, and while there may be a discrepancy in league position and club finance to consider between these teams, sixty-two players vying for eleven starting spots is astonishing. The advantages to the national football squad are obvious, though we know the national team’s needs are low in the priorities of the Premiership clubs.

Mark Hughes manager of Manchester City – a club with resources Liverpool can only but dream – ideally believes in a squad of twenty-four with academy players in support. Jose Mourinho also used the figure of twenty-four as his optimum number when he began his success at Chelsea, a number that Luiz Felipe Scolari endorsed when he took over at Stamford bridge. According to the most recent figures, Deloittes, accountants who specialize in soccer, the reds of Liverpool paid out more than 77.5 million in players wages alone for the single season ending in 2007. Question, whats the point of paying inflated wages to players who never play? Why is Benitez stock pilling young talent that never get to show their skills? we don’t know and Rafa is not saying. It will not be as prosaic as ‘we have them, which means they cannot play for them’ no, but if you have so may players all trying their best to make a first team, how do you keep and motivate the other forty odd players that fail to make the first eleven or even, second eleven.
